"The Evolution of Institutional Investing: What Pension Funds are Doing with Your Money"


Carl Bang is President, Sun Life Investment Management Inc., a Sun Life Financial business that offers investment solutions to defined benefit pension plan clients and other institutional investors. Carl is responsible for the business in Canada.

Carl has significant experience in developing investment strategies and leading investment businesses. He was most recently Chief Investment Officer of the Qatar Foundation Endowment (QFE), playing a key role in building it to one of the largest endowment funds in the world. Prior to his QFE role, Carl was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of State Street Global Advisors (SSGA) based in Paris, managing European and Middle Eastern client assets. Preceding this role, he was President, Senior Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer for SSGA Canada, during a time of rapid business growth and new investment strategy expansion. Earlier in his career, Carl held portfolio manager roles in Canada and in Norway, including during the founding period of Norges Bank Investment Management, the group that manages the Norwegian Sovereign Wealth Fund.

Carl has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Windsor and an M.B.A. from the Schulich School of Business, York University, graduating as a Schulich Scholar for academic excellence and entrepreneurship. He is also a CFA Charterholder.

Highly active in finance and educational organizations, Carl served as head of the global CFA curriculum committee responsible for portfolio management and as vice chair of the CFA institute professional development program. He also has held directorships on the CFA global advisory board, the Financial Research Foundation of Canada, the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance, CIRANO (a Quebec-focused financial market think-tank) and is currently a director of EDHEC Business School’s Risk Institute’s International Advisory Board.

Philip (Phil) C. Gillin is Senior Managing Director and Portfolio Manager, Canadian Property Investments for Sun Life Investment Management Inc. He is a portfolio manager for the Sun Life Canadian Real Estate Fund and Sun Life Canadian Commercial Mortgage Fund, with responsibility for the management and performance of these funds.


Phil is also Senior Managing Director and Portfolio Manager, Canadian Property Investments for Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada (“Sun Life Assurance”), with responsibility for its large portfolio of Canadian commercial mortgages and real estate investments. In addition, Phil has an enterprise role as Chairman of the company’s International Sustainability Council.

Phil has 35 years’ experience in the property investment sector. He joined Sun Life Assurance in 1998 as Vice-President of Canadian Real Estate, overseeing the growth and enhancing the management of the portfolio, and was appointed as Senior Managing Director and Head of Canadian Real Estate in 2007. Phil’s responsibilities were expanded in 2012 to also include Canadian commercial mortgages. Prior to joining Sun Life Assurance, Phil managed the real estate assets at one of Canada’s largest retailers, and prior to that he with was one of North America’s largest real estate companies.

Phil speaks frequently on property investment topics and is very active in industry and community organizations. Among others, he is a member of the Commercial Real Estate Development Association (known as NAIOP) and the International Council of Shopping Centers, serves on the Real Estate Advisory Board of the Schulich School of Business, and is a director of the Real Property Association of Canada.

Phil holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario and an M.B.A. from the Schulich School of Business. He is also a Certified Management Accountant.
