Ryan has been Urban Futures’ resident economist since 2004. Ryan holds a BA (Honours) in Economics from Queen’s University and an MA in Economics from the University of British Columbia. During his time at UBC, Ryan developed and taught courses in both micro- and macroeconomics.

Ryan is recognized for the insightful and customized demographic and economic analyses he undertakes at Urban Futures. He has been a contributing author to numerous publications, including many of Urban Futures’ publicly-available reports. Recent examples include:

Evaluating Measures of Housing Affordability in British Columbia

Sustainable: British Columbia’s Health Care System and Our Aging Population

Evolution or Extinction: Harmonization in a British Columbia That Works

A Perfect Storm: Sustaining Canada’s Economy During Our Next Demographic Transition

Ryan frequently presents on current and future demographic, economic, and housing market trends and how these dimensions of change will impact our communities. Recent audiences include the Urban Development Institute, the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board, and the Vancouver Island Construction Association. Ryan is a member of the Association of Professional Economists of BC, and also provides regular commentary to both local and national media, including newspaper, radio, and television. Most notably, however, Ryan is a diehard fan of God’s team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Before you laugh, he wishes to point out that both the Leafs and the Canucks have won the same number of Stanley Cups since 1970. Go Leafs go.
