Wendy Waters

Vice President, Research Services and Strategy

GWL Realty Advisors

Wendy Waters is the Vice President for Research Services and Strategy at GWL Realty Advisors, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Great West Life co (now doing business as Canada Life).  GWLRA manages the real estate investments of pension funds and institutional clients.  It has $14.2 Billion under management in Canada with a further $4Billion in the US across office, industrial, rental apartment and retail assets.  

Working with the GWLRA Research team, she tracks and analyzes the short, medium and longer term trends that drive real estate performance as well as monitors current real estate market indicators from vacancy and rental rates to yields and capital flows. The research team also produces scenario models, informs investment and development strategy as well as publishes research reports to share selected findings.

Wendy has been with GWLRA for 15 years and was previously the Director of Research at Avison Young.  Prior to the career change to real estate she completed a Ph.D. in history (with expertise in 20th century global economic development) as well as experienced the “dot com” boom and bust from the inside a technology start up.  She is based in Vancouver, however when pandemics are not keeping her at home, also spends professional time in Toronto and Calgary.  She is a regular presenter, moderator and panelist at real estate industry event as well as a guest on property-related podcasts.

Colin Johnston is the President of Altus Group’s Research, Valuation and Advisory division in Canada, a group comprised of over 350 appraisers, economists, planners, advisors and data scientists. Altus is a leading provider of independent software, data solutions and consulting services to the commercial real estate industry. During his 25 plus years in the industry, Colin has become one of the country’s pre-eminent valuation and advisory professionals, with a particular emphasis on investment grade assets. Over the past year, Altus has valued assets totaling more than $350B in the Canadian marketplace.



Carl Gomez

Chief Economist and Head Market Analytics 

CoStar Group

With over twenty years of business experience, Carl Gomez is a well-known Canadian economist and respected investment professional specializing in real estate. He was recently appointed Chief Economist and Head Market Analytics for CoStar Group and is responsible for working strategically to accelerate the brand’s growth momentum in Canada and to build and manage a team of high performance, senior-level talent across the country.

Carl was formerly Senior Vice President, Research & Strategy at QuadReal Property Group where he oversaw portfolio strategy, research and strategic market analysis for the company from both the fundamental and capital markets perspective.

Prior to that he was the SVP & Chief Economist of Bentall Kennedy, where he was responsible for leading Canadian research initiatives. He has also previously held senior economist positions specializing in real estate and financial market analysis at TD Bank Group, the Royal Bank of Canada and CMHC.

Carl holds an M.A. in Financial Economics from the University of Victoria, and an Honours B.A. (Economics) from the University of Western Ontario. He is currently on the board of directors for the Toronto Association of Business Economists and is also a sessional instructor at the Schulich School of Business where he teaches real estate economics.  Carl and his wife Elizabeth, currently live in Oakville, Ontario with their daughter Savannah.
